LAS CROABAS DOG PROJECT
Situated on the North East Coast of Puerto Rico lies the beautiful town of Las Croabas.  Locals refer to the area as a fishing village and a beach lovers dream.  Several restaurants line the park.  Hundreds of visitors invade the village on weekends to put their boats into the water, have a cocktail by the sea, visit the bioluminescent bay, and enjoy the amazing views of St. Thomas, Palomino Island and Culebra.  Unfortunately, locals also come to dump their unwanted dogs.  On average we care for about 10 local dogs of Las Croabas.  Island Dog is now taking full responsibility for these dogs.  Each dog is neutered/spayed, vaccinated, tattooed, given flea, tick and heartworm prevention.  Signs are
placed notifying the public that these dogs are property of Island Dog.
We are working in cooperation with the City of Fajardo to help reduce dog overpopulation
and to promote tourism to Las Croabas.  Every year we adopt 10+ dogs from the Las Croabas area!  Many tourists adopt our dogs.  Many are also taken in our state-wide shelter programs!

Signs hung from the telephone poles of Las Croabas notify locals and tourists about the welfare of the dogs in the park.  Each dog is vaccinated, spayed/neutered, tattooed, and tagged.  Here Sandy Soroka is hanging signs in the park.

The smaller sign, with the "no dog symbol", reminds locals that it is against the law (Law 67) to dump or abandon your pets in public areas of Puerto Rico.

CARMEN

Carmen became a Las Croabas dog in June 2009.  She and Katie, our director, became best friends, and Carmen enjoyed many long walks with Katie on the beach.  Everyday Carmen would jump into Katie's car for a ride.  She would then return her to the park at night to be united with her doggie friends.  Sadly in August of 2010 Carmen died.  We suspect poisoning and charges will be filed once we discover Carmen's killer.  She is missed by all in Las Croabas.  She was a great, loyal friend who left a mark on Las Croabas and all our hearts.  May she rest in peace...
