DID YOU KNOW???

Puerto Rico
-There is an estimated 100,000-200,000 dogs roaming the streets and beaches, either born into homelessness, abandoned, or abused.

-On an island the size of Connecticut, Puerto Rico has 78 cities. While each city is required by law to have an animal shelter, there are currently 5 small, unequipped, and under funded shelters on the island.  There are also a few control agencies available for "humane euthanasia."  Click here for a list of shelters and control agencies in Puerto Rico.

*It is estimated that 98% of animals entering these shelters are euthanized because of overpopulation and illness.  Over 500 dogs and cats will die a day in the island's control agencies because of overpopulation.

*There is an estimated 450 "pet shops"selling unhealthy, uncertified, and poorly kept animals.   Many of these shops are illegally vaccinating and treating dogs.  Most pets will find the streets their home when they graduate from their "cute stage."

*It is estimated that less then 10% of the pet population ever visit a veterinarian clinic

The United States

-Every year, between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats enter US shelters

-5 million animals are euthanized, 570 per hour

-over 30% of pets in shelters are purebred

-Everyday 10,000 humans are born, and 70,000 puppies and kittens are born.

-One unsterilized female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in 7 years.

-In 6 years one unsterilized female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies
